Canterbury Ales is a welcoming spot for a brew year-round. But it's even more in the fall. The current brews on tap merit a visit. Besides, the other night, bratwurst was a special.

From the draft list, you can go local with the sweetly malty Southampton Pumpkin Ale, a mellow choice; or take a hoppy turn with the Greenpoint Disorient IPA, which has a hint of citrus. Also recommended: Lake Placid Ubu Ale, an upstate spin on an English strong ale, with a reddish hue that points you to the meat on the menu. And Sierra Nevada Tumbler, a fine brown ale, deserves your attention, too. All four would make a  gutsy flight of brews. But Canterbury has plenty of others for balance.

That special bratwurst platter was husky enough, with beer-braised red cabbage and potato salad. Even sturdier was the German-accent pulled-pork casserole, with scalloped potatoes. The staples at Canterbury Ales include a Scotch egg, a hard-boiled egg wrapped with sausage, breaded, deep-fried and served at room temperature; and both beef stew and shepherd's pie made with lamb. With any of these, order the baked pretzels, which show up with honey mustard.

You'll be ready for winter.
