A cake would be too humdrum, so the Italian specialty market Iavarone Bros. is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Wantagh store by sampling a 12-year-old Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese.

“My importer says he’s been aging it,” said partner Joe Iavarone, “but it’s possible it just got lost in his warehouse in Italy.”

The cheese, produced by Bertinelli Gianni, will be “opened” at 3 p.m. on Saturday Nov. 15 and, up until that moment, patrons can enter a guess-the-weight-of-the-cheese raffle. Whoever comes closest will win four tickets to a New York Islanders game at the Nassau Coliseum.

Once the cheese is open, it’s free samples for everyone.

Each of the four Iavarone Bros. stores (Wantagh, Woodbury, New Hyde Park and Maspeth) will be raffling off a free “Gobbler” prepared Thanksgiving dinner (serves 10 to 12, regular price is $199). No guessing is required to enter, and winners will be announced the weekend of Nov. 22.

Iavarone Bros. is at 1166 Wantagh Ave., Wantagh, 516-781-6400.
