Cafe La Strada, an old-school spot in Hauppauge for Italian food, has closed.

The straightforward and unpretentious restaurant opened in 1993 in a little strip mall situated just south of Exit 56 on the Long Island Expressway and was popular with the local business and neighborhood crowds. It was retro in atmosphere.

The place remained reliable over the years, serving up such classics as escarole-and-beans soup, eggplant rollatine, steak alla pizzaiola, shrimp fra diavolo and, of course, chicken Parmigiana.
