Formerly a Chinese restaurant, Jade Palace in East Northport has taken a pan-Asian turn, adding a sushi bar as well as a host of Thai and Japanese specialties.

A recent dinner started with a rousing bowl of hot and sour soup. Jumbo shrimp in a red curry sauce was a Chinese-Thai hybrid: nicely cooked shellfish and lots of vegetables in a dark and nuanced sauce.

I had no complaints about a white tuna and jalapeño roll. But a peanut and avocado roll appeared to be almost  peanut-free. Our waiter, who stopped by the table to ask how everything was, was told of this. After speaking with the sushi chef, he said that there were peanuts in the roll and then returned with a dish of said nuts, very finely chopped. We politely turned it away. The truth is, there's no reason to bother with a peanut-avocado roll if you're not getting contrast of salty, crunchy nuts and smooth avocado.

The whole roll was a big $4, but no switch was offered for the unfinished roll and no price adjustment was made on the bill. What happened to “the customer is always right?“

Biggest bummer: The message in my fortune cookie. “You may laugh now, but wait until you get home.”

Jade Palace is at 18 Hewitt Sq., East Northport, 631-757-1888.
