Tim Cushman, chef at O Ya, a contemporary Japanese restaurant in Boston, was named best chef in the northeast last night at the annual James Beard Foundation Awards.

Gerry Hayden of The North Fork Table & Inn in Southold was a finalist for the second consecutive year. No Long Island chef has won the JBF competition.

Daniel Humm, of Eleven Madison Park in Manhattan, was named outstanding chef nationwide; Boulevard in San Francisco, outstanding restaurant; Next in Chicago, best new restaurant. Michael Anthony of Gramercy Tavern in Manhattan was named best chef, New York City.

Christina Tosi of Momofuku Milk Bar in Manhattan received the "rising new chef" award. La Grenouille in Manhattan was honored for outstanding service.
