On days like this one, when it’s all you can do to stop your teeth from chattering, there’s culinary relief at three Long Island eateries — each a specialist in a single kind of comfort food.
In Mineola, you’ll find Mama Soup, situated in the ground floor of an office building. Here, a soup bar features 28 varieties, which can be eaten on premises or packed to go. Highly recommended: the beef goulash, as well as the chicken potpie soup, which is topped with a biscuit after it’s ladled into a carton.
Patchogue has That Meetball Place, a gastropub devoted to the lush comfort of meatballs, from the classic beef-veal-pork variety to a spiced Moroccan lamb ball to a vegetable risotto ball. Have yours in a bowl with sauce, atop pasta or tucked into a slider roll. You'll also find several inventive meatball sandwiches.
In Garden City, Mac & Melts is all about the gooey goodness of macaroni and cheese and melted-cheese sandwiches. Brighten your day and soothe your spirits with the creamy, bubbly crunchy-topped Southwestern mac and cheese. A simple grilled cheese sandwich, made with American and Cheddar, works wonders, too.
