Tres leches -- or three milks -- cake is a popular conclusion to meals in many Latin American and Caribbean countries.
Classically, it's made with a simple sponge or butter cake that's been soaked in a mixture of whole, evaporated and condensed milk. Often, it's topped with whipped cream.
You'll find very good versions at these Long Island Latin American restaurants:
DOMINICAN RESTAURANT 5, Deer Park
This ultracasual Dominican spot serves a tres leches cake that's as luxuriously moist as any you'd find in the Dominican Republic.
CHICKEN'S ROAD, Merrick
At this Venezuelan fast-food spot specializing -- but not limited to -- rotisserie chicken, dessert chef Maria Jose Gonzalez turns out a moist and appealing tres leches cake.
LA CASA LATINA, Westbury
The tres leches cake at this pan-Latin restaurant is about as lush and milky as it gets.
611 Old Country Rd., Westbury, 516-280-7795, lacasalatinany.com
CARACARA MEXICAN GRILL, Farmingdale
Inventiveness and authenticity balance well at this Mexican spot where house-made berry tres leches cake is moist and fruity.
