I’ve been shopping regularly at Fairway in Plainview since it opened in 2001, but I never stopped into the cafe for a meal until today. The modest eatery consists of about 20 self-serve hot entrees and sides, pizza, sushi, chopped-to-order salads, and wraps, sandwiches and pannini (served hot or cold.)

From the hot side I got a little container of “Korean chicken” ($6.99/pound), boneless, skinless thighs in a good sweet-hot marinade.

I also bought a turkey-avocado-sprout sandwich from which I immediately removed the sprouts. (I mean, blech.) The highlight of this sandwich was the bread, dense, hearty and seed filled. After I ate half my sandwich I marched over to Fairway’s bakery and the woman behind the counter helped me ID the loaf. It turned out to be Eli’s Health Pullman, $3.99 for a 1-pound loaf, $5.99 for a 2-pound loaf.
