Mihana Japanese Bistro opens in Woodbury

A good neighborhood sushi restaurant is a great addition to any town, and Woodbury and its surroundings are getting a new one: Mihana Japanese Bistro & Bar, which quietly debuted in Commack last year, has expanded to the hamlet.

This crowd-pleaser of a spot feels similar to some Kashi locations, but the new restaurant, Mihana Modern Japanese & Lounge, has a smaller menu and more polished luxury palette of sea foam and teal amid elegant gold accents. The expansive dining room — this one with a patio, complete with lounge-style seating and heat lamps — is dotted with oversize leather banquettes, plush table seating and a massive bar. Anchoring it all: a white and purple neon (it was inevitable) floral and light arrangement. It almost feels like this restaurant could've been a location on HBO's "Sex and the City."

The menu includes the usual suspects, from edamame ($6) and gyoza ($8) to seaweed salads ($8), rock shrimp tempura ($14) and crispy tuna rice ($14). A more interesting inclusion: an uni-Kumamoto oyster pairing dolloped with roe and doused with yuzu foam ($10). Fancy, foofy signature rolls include the Valentine, with spicy crunchy tuna on the inside wrapped in tuna ($18), a Sex on the Beach ($18), which comprises shrimp tempura and spicy tuna in a soy nori wrap topped with salmon, tuna, avocado and spicy sauce. Hot entrees include hibachi teriyaki and tempura entrees available in salmon ($25), chicken ($22) and filet ($32) — which are generous and oversized, easily able to feed two. There are also build-your-own-ramen options and lunch specials from $10 Monday to Saturday.

Don’t miss the long, inviting bar and cocktail menu, which meshes perfectly with the patio, and will feature interesting combinations like the Shiitake Sour with shiitake-infused whiskey and dried mushroom as it evolves. For now, imbibers can enjoy wine, beer and sake pairings.
