So many puns come to mind (shakin' a leg, keeping abreast of food holidays), but I just can't stop singing that Beastie Boys line, “It's finger-lickin', finger-lickin' good, y'all” out of my head. Must mean it's ... National Fried Chicken Day.

This is a day of unification, when fans of white and dark meat line up in unison, proclaiming their love of poultry rolled in flour and fried. (Well, that's how my mom makes it, so naturally it's what I consider to be finger-lickin' good).

But it's too hot to be in the kitchen. Why not head to a couple of our favorite Long Island spots? And please weigh in on your favorite eatery for fried chicken in the comments section below. I am far from adverse to spreading my wings and flying to a new favorite.

LL DENT, Carle Place. Run by mother-daughter team Lillian and Leisa Dent, who serve up a host of Southern soul-food specialties.

SALAMANDER'S GENERAL STORE, Greenport. With an array of takeout items, a perfect lunch is fried chicken paired with fresh-squeezed lemonade.
