In a time of ferment, here comes National Pickle Day to help.
The calendar of food holidays treats you to flavors of all kinds. Nov. 14 even shares its space with National Spicy Guacamole Day. But that's for another time. This is the moment to celebrate the half-sour and the sweet, the bread-and-butter and the habanero hot.
You can get very good pickles at delicatessens, fast food outlets and street vendors. But here is one pickle specialist devoted to the brine. Products are available at the source and online. Pucker up.
The Pickle People in West Hempstead has a savory repertoire. The people have been in business for 38 years. The pickles include: classic sour, sweet ginger, sweet horseradish, honey mustard, honey hickory, sweet peppermint and Fiery Jamaican Pepper Relish, known as "Dead Drops." Pickle juice is sold by the quart. They also pickle onions. The Pickle People can be found inside the Western Beef supermarket, front end of aisle nine.
