New again: Brownstones, Amityville

Brownstones in Amityville used to be just a coffeehouse. Not any more.
Following a remodeling and expansion, the place reopened a few months ago as a proper table-service restaurant. It has a clever design (one wall is done up to resemble the front of a 1930s theater) as well as a full breakfast and lunch menu.
On a recent afternoon, I enjoyed a “panini and soup” combo: a bowl of bright and briny Manhattan clam chowder, along with half of the oddly named (but very good) “flat bread 9th Street Panini” — grill-pressed ciabatta enclosing juicy lemon-herb-grilled chicken breast, Fontina cheese and sauteed broccoli rabe. All that and nicely dressed baby greens, too, for just $7.59. My lunchmate’s frittata ($7.49) – eggs baked with diced potatoes, prosciutto, fresh basil and shaved Parmesan – was yet another success. Pancakes seemed ordinary in comparison.
Brownstones is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Find it at 55 Merrick Rd., Amityville, (631) 608-8627
