New: Downtown Burger in Sayville

The beautiful white clapboard building housing the new Downtown Burger at Five Points Cafe may look like a historical restoration, but it’s actually new construction. The interior, with its wood-beamed ceilings and walls the color of mustard, also is impressive.

I’m happy to report that the burgers are, too. Hefty, loose-textured and oozy, they’re imbued with that mineral-rich flavor I look for in beef. Another surprise is a spicy, juicy chicken burger topped with tomato and mozzarella.

But those burgers deserve better than the previously frozen fries that accompany them. Worse yet is a side of mac and cheese, grainy and oddly smoky. Redemption takes the form of a terrific chocolate milkshake.

Service couldn't be more friendly or accommodating.
