New in Kings Park: Mrs. Brown's

Breakfast and lunch (but not dinner) are now being served at the new Mrs. Brown’s Kitchen & Grill in Kings Park, a town whose restaurant scene seems to be really taking off.

The eatery made its debut last month in the digs of the former Hokey Pokey. Nice makeover; what used to be a dark, dingy diner is now a lovely contemporary spot done in soothing tones of pear and almond.

Who is Mrs. Brown? It's Christy Brown, wife of co-owner Don Brown. Brown's partner, Matthew Hudson, cooked at Maureen’s Kitchen in Smithtown and Sweet Mama’s in Northport.

At a recent breakfast, food was slow in coming. I was not impressed with Hudson’s pancakes, which were thin and rubbery. A Western omelet, on the other hand, was fluffy and light, served with crisp, oniony home fried potatoes. Challah French toast was fine, too. Clearly, the place has promise but a few kinks to work out.

What's on the lunch menu? Items like a Cubano sandwich (sliced pork, ham, Swiss, pickles and multigrain mustard on grilled club roll), at $8.25, a Southwestern salad (romaine in tortilla bowl with shredded cheese, tortilla strips, tomatoes, black beans, sliced avocado and a scoop of house-made chili) at $10.95 and a classic burger at $8.50.
