New in Long Beach: Cancun Mexican Restaurant

A mechanical bull and tequila bar may draw a party crowd to Long Beach’s new Cancun Mexican Restaurant, but the place clearly offers more than Margaritas and mojitos.
The restaurant represents the culinary collaboration of co-owning chef Alfredo Leyva and Pedro Luna, both of whom own Mexican eateries in Queens. Their menu, which offers both authentic Mexican dishes and crowd-pleasers, includes such choices as guacamole prepared tableside in a molcajete, or stone mortar ($10), ceviche ($12), fajitas — skirt steak, chicken, shrimp or mixed – ($16-$20), lengua de res (beef tongue) tacos (3 for $12), mole poblano, or chicken breast in mole sauce ($16) and huachinango a la diabla, or filet of red snapper in creamy chipotle sauce ($18).
Beverage director and manager Frank Pollack says that the place infuses its liquors with such fresh ingredients as cucumbers, jalapeño, strawberry and basil.
