A five-meat combination at Bobbique in Patchogue holds St. Louis ribs, barbecue chicken, pulled pork, chopped brisket and skewered barbecue shrimp. Credit: Newsday / Joan Reminick

It’s been eight years since Bobbique first opened in Patchogue. Back in 2006, you had to order at the counter and pay before sitting down. Thankfully, that system was long ago scrapped in favor of table service. On a recent evening, we found the service pleasant and fairly efficient. There was an impressive list of beers, on tap and bottled, and blues on the sound system, too.

As for the ‘cue, it was, for the most part, a hit. To start, there were jumbo BBQ chicken wings ($7.95), which, true to their name, were big, meaty and smoky. This was followed by, “Sonny’s plate,” ($29.95) a combination tray holding five different meats. Best were the tender St. Louis ribs and well-burnished BBQ chicken, both good and smoky. Pulled pork had smokiness, too, although it was a trifle dry. Dryness was a problem with the chopped brisket, which relied upon its heavy coat of BBQ sauce for moisture. A nice surprise was skewered BBQ shrimp which, while not slow-smoked, were plump and infused with the flavor of the grill.

About sides: Mac and cheese, while good, was a tad overcooked. Nice baked beans, though, and moist slightly-sweet cornbread. Best (for an extra $1) were hand-cut fries and sweet potato fries. Needless to say, that huge platter was shared by two — and still yielded plenty of leftovers.

For dessert: Old fashioned Southern banana pudding ($4.50), creamy and studded with vanilla wafers.
