You can pick a poblano or jalapeño pepper right out of a nearby planter if you're seated in the greenhouse/dining room of the new Verde Kitchen & Cocktails in Bay Shore. The Mexican restaurant opened in the renovated space that last housed Five Star, a Honduran restaurant. Owner Anthony Tartaglia said that he and his brother Andrew conceived the place to serve authentic and traditional Mexican cuisine, with an emphasis on specialties from Mexico City and Oaxaca.

Chef Zach Rude formerly cooked at the Hideaway in Ocean Beach and the former Luce & Hawkins in Jamesport. On the dinner menu: a trio of guacamoles ($10) — traditional, pescado (with smoked fluke and shrimp) and rajas (with roasted poblanos and pomegranate seeds); Mexico City carnitas tacos ($7); Mexican street corn ($6); Oaxacan-style carne asada, or marinated skirt steak ($29) and puerco al pastor, or marinated pork chop with pineapple, hominy and tortilla pieces ($29). On the Sunday brunch menu: sweet corn pancakes ($11), masa biscuits with chorizo gravy ($13) and revueltas, or scrambled eggs with chorizo and black beans ($12).
