The Texas Ranger was an on-and-off presence on the Freeport eating scene from the 1940s through the 1990s. Over the years, the place accrued a loyal following for two signature items, its chili and its  “Ranger burger,” topped with shredded cabbage, tomato and a “special” sauce.

Now, The Texas Ranger has launched at a new Freeport address under new ownership.

When I stopped in, the place was hopping. There were no printed menus, just a list of items and prices posted on a board behind the counter. Here’s an overview: Chili ($3.49 small; $4.49 large), Ranger burger ($4.49), grilled or fried chicken sandwich ($4.99), roast beef melt ($6.99) and chili dog ($3.49). A kids' roster lists grilled cheese, chicken fingers and a hot dog, each accompanied by fries ($4.49 to $6.49).

The Texas Ranger is at 365 Atlantic Ave., Freeport, 516-415-7289.
