Sushi Republic has opened in the Hillside Avenue building that, until April, housed Ara Sushi & Grill, a pan-Asian restaurant noted for its Korean cuisine. Ara’s predecessor, Imperial Seoul (2010-13) also had a large Korean menu.

Sushi Republic’s menu looks to be about half sushi, with entrees ranging from $15 to $22, signature rolls around $12. The rest of the menu is a blend of Chinese, Thai and fusion items such as General Tso’s chicken ($14), ma po tofu ($12), Thai curry seafood casserole ($20) and grilled Chilean sea bass ($20). A “Taste of China & Southeast Asia” lunch special offers a dozen entrees with soup and rice for $6.50 to $7.95.

Sushi Republic is at 3365 Hillside Ave., New Hyde Park, 516-747-3377, sushirepublicny.com.
