Schafer’s Restaurant is up and running in the former Port Jefferson home of Catch Seafood Tavern.
Until recently, only the top level (with a roof deck and retractable roof) was open after a small fire and a flood downstairs. But, chef Paul Govin said, the entire place is now going strong, serving a New American menu with an emphasis on seafood.
Govin formerly cooked at WAVE at Danfords (about a block away). A once-over of his menu revealed a favorite from the site's previous incarnation, Rhode Island style clam “stuffies” (baked stuffed cherrystone clams with chorizo, roasted corn and tomato, $10), as well as an “angry tuna” roll ($10, from a raw bar-sushi roster), wasabi potato and crab-stuffed flounder ($25) and a 12-ounce filet mignon ($40). You can, of course, get a lobster roll (on a croissant, $23) or simple bacon cheeseburger ($12). Desserts — such as a summer berry bread pudding — are house-made.
Schafer’s Restaurant is at 111 W. Broadway, Port Jefferson, 631-473-8300.
