Painters Restaurant reborn in Brookhaven Hamlet

It’s always news when a restaurant returns from the hereafter. The latest resurrection involves Painters’ Restaurant in Brookhaven Hamlet. The place suffered a fire in May of 2012 and, for a long while, bore a “for sale” sign out front. It is now reopened.
Owner Craig Baz said that the place has been restored to keep its historic feel. Brick has been exposed, floors have been refinished and 85-year-old doors have been stripped of paint.
Executive chef Luis Marin returns with an expanded version of the old menu. Now, said Baz, there are 26 beers on tap. The place is still filled with the work of local artists, but there is no longer a pool table. “We’re keeping the family atmosphere,” Baz said.
On the New American menu: steamed little neck clams ($12), tomato BLT sliders ($10), roasted beet salad ($8), the Frieda Kahlo caliente burger, blackened and topped with guacamole, two cheeses, chipotle mayo and pico di gallo ($15), a grilled chicken club sandwich ($13), a grilled personal Margherita pizza ($8) and buttermilk fried chicken ($22). Desserts include a salted caramel cake ($8) and apple cranberry crumb pie ($8).
