Stuffed garlic knot at Delfiore Pizza Co., Patchogue

Good news for meatball lovers: Angelo Galeotafiore, who just closed Mangia Mangia in Patchogue, is still making his marvelous spheres and more at the newly relocated Delfiore Pizza Co. You'll find it in the former digs of MuChaChos Grill in Patchogue.

This is an ultra-casual counter service spot with paper plates and plastic utensils. But the pizza, made in a brick oven whose shelves rotate, is serious stuff. I tried the Margherita pie; its light, crisp crust had lovely flavor and a fresh mozzarella and tomato topping. The same dough was used for the stuffed garlic knot, $4, a divine little baked eggplant and roasted pepper sandwich. (See picture at left.)

I was daunted at the sight of the big meatball parm “fazzani.” Although I only ate half of a half, it turned out to be light, lush, irresistible.

The pizzeria makes its own mozzarella and gets meat from another family operation, the Delfiore Italian Pork Store, also in Patchogue.

I wish the place were more comfortable (we had to bus our own table) and the paper plates of better quality (try cutting a "fazzani" on one of them). Still, I'd return in a heartbeat to stake out a choice booth.

Delfiore Pizza Co. is at 75 E. Main St., Patchogue, 631-475-2500.
