Port Washington: Happy National Waffle Day

We tend to avoid those ubiquitous “national holidays” that purport to “honor” popular foods but are usually transparent attempts by some big corporation to promote one of its products.
I recently declined to write about “National Coffee Milkshake Day” (July 26) after I was notified by an operative of 5W Public Relations that the holiday offered “the perfect opportunity to indulge and cool off as the temperatures soar. Without having to leave your kitchen, the KRUPS KB710 Blender easily whips up this cool and sweet summer treat.” (In March, I did write about National Chocolate Covered Raisin Day, because this Raisinets-invented celebration was so ludicrous.)
However. It appears that there is some justification for today’s being National Waffle Day. On Aug. 24, 1869, Cornelius Swarthout of Troy, New York, was awarded the first U.S. patent for a waffle iron. Over at Main Street Bakery in Port Washington, they’re celebrating with a vanilla cupcake with maple-cream-cheese icing and a wedge of toasted maple waffle, drizzled with a maple glaze ($3.25).
