Whenever I drive along South Broadway in Hicksville, I check on Punjabi Kabab House, a favorite Indian restaurant but one that never seems to be very busy. Tuesday night my fears were realized: The space is empty, with a “for rent” sign in the window.
Punjabi Kabab House had friendly service and stellar tandoori meats, breads and vegetables. And I always got a kick out of the location — which was the site of the very first Mr. Sausage.
That location, however, may be what doomed the restaurant. It was hidden in a corner of a shopping center dominated by vacant stores. Now there's one more vacancy.
Punjabi Kabab House was the suburban satellite of a restaurant in Queens. The original Punjabi Kabab House is still open at 9152 Lefferts Blvd., South Richmond Hill, 718-846-280.
