A recent find you may want to check out is Sabroso, a little Dominican place in East Meadow. Talk about value for the money.

One dinner begins with empanadas ($2 each; 3 for $5) so crisp, flaky and greaseless, it’s hard to believe they came out of a fry basket, not the oven. One is filled with a savory ground beef mixture, another, similarly, with ground chicken, a third with melted cheese. All are deeply satisfying. So, too, is the pernil asado ($12) — roasted pork served up moist and dripping with juices, accompanied by addictive sweet plantains and yellow rice with pigeon peas. For dessert, there’s smooth, creamy flan. So good.

Co-owners Santiago Nunez and Omar Palanco could not be more hospitable. And while the place lacks a public restroom, just ask and you’ll be shown through the kitchen to the staff facilities. Some minor inconveniences are worth coping with.

Sabroso is at 224 East Meadow Ave., East Meadow, 516-307-1750.
