A two-day celebration of East End wine country, capped by auctions that include half-barrels of wine and wine-themed dinners, is slated for Sept. 24 and 25 at Wolffer Estate in Sagaponack and other sites.
The events are fundraisers for East End Hospice and the Peconic Land Trust. The first live auction of Long Island wines will take place on Saturday, Sept. 25.
Among the items to be auctioned are artist-designed half-barrels of pre-release merlot. A tour of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and a wine dinner sponsored by Bedell Cellars at The Modern, the restaurant at MoMA, is among the culinary highlights; as is a stay at the Shinn Farmhouse, which adds an aerial tour and a hearthside dinner with "Top Chef" star Tom Colicchio.
Wine Spectator magazine is offering two all-expense paid tickets to the "New World Wine Experience" in Las Vegas, Oct. 28-30. Peconic Bay Winery contributes sailing with winemaker Greg Gove and a case of each wine made at Peconic Bay.
There also will be a silent auction, with bids on items that include two bottles of 1975 Hargrave Pinot Noir, one of the earliest fine wines made on the East End; a Riedel crystal decanter; a handmade wool kilim from Knotted Dreams in Greenport; and a weekend at Sunset Beach on Shelter Island.
The sessions will feature programs on winemaking and tasting and a dinner at Wolffer Estate prepared by stellar East End chefs, including Gerry Hayden of The North Fork Table & Inn in Southold and Keith Luce of Luce & Hawkins in Jamesport.
The price of events ranges from $25 to attend a wine salon program to $3,500 to reserve a table for 10 at the dinner and auction at Wolffer.
