After more than 15 years tucked away on a side street, Salamander’s General Store has moved to Greenport’s main drag. Now rechristened Salamander’s on Front, the little takeout shop has expanded in every way possible.

In the soaring bi-level space, there’s now more shelf space for owner Claudia Helinski’s carefully curated specialty items — first-rate pasta, condiments, teas and coffees — and more refrigerated cases for her prepared foods. The day I stopped by I had a glorious lunch of spicy bean salad (gigantes, kidney and chickpeas), shrimp in a Mexican salsa, the signature finely shredded purple coleslaw and a salad of quinoa, black rice and wheat berries.

There are fresh salads, sandwiches, burgers and kebabs to order, as well as Salamander’s fried chicken. The menu calls it “famous and fabulous” and I would have to agree.

The vast new space also has plenty of seating, a full bar (marble-topped at that) and a loft space upstairs that Helinski plans on using for events.

Salamander’s on Front is at 38 Front St., Greenport, 631-477-3711, salamandersgreenport.com.
