Shelter Island needed a little SALT.

And SALT Waterfront Bar & Grill is lighting up the area around the Island Boatyard and Marina, with some very good food at the restaurant — plus drinks at a wine tasting room and a bar made from a converted schooner.

It's a show, whether you arrive by car, boat or on foot; whether you're here for beverages or chef Carrie Mitchum's lively, casual fare.

Try the pulled Caribbean chicken sliders or the chicken wings with the “secret hot sauce,” the generous lobster roll on a toasted brioche bun or the zesty gumbo with a floating disc of grilled polenta. Maybe the blackened bluefish tacos or the steamed mussels in ouzo-fueled broth.

This isn't a stop for dessert. But there's always ice cream and a round of miniature golf at the Whale's Tale on Ram Island Road.
