Chicken pot pie at Sapsuckers, Huntington

At the 2-week-old Sapsuckers Hops & Grub in Huntington, signs were highly promising: the bread comes from the artisanal Tom Cat Bakery in Queens, the organic eggs from Makinajian Farms in Huntington. The place serves grass-fed beef, free-range chicken and Berkshire pork. Prices are truly reasonable — only a lobster roll exceeds $20; most everything else on the menu is under $15. There are 16 draft and 40 bottled beers from small breweries.

The casual American spot is named for an American bird (the yellow bellied sapsucker). It’s co-owned by executive chef Nino Antuzzi (of Red and Osteria da Nino in Huntington), manager Peter Armata and chef de cuisine Kelley Danek.

At a recent visit, I relished the appetizer called “three little pigs” – pulled pork and spicy slaw on “petite” potato rolls. In an equally piggy vein was a Cubano sandwich on ciabatta, a zesty co-mingling of roasted pork, ham, Swiss, pickles. Chicken pot pie, served in a crock, featured a flaky top over plenty of chicken and vegetables in a rich white sauce.

“American comfort food,” was the way Armata described the menu. No arguments there.

Sapsuckers Hops & Grub is at 287 Main St., Huntington, 631-683-4945
