Shakers is shakin' in Mineola

Shakers, a self-proclaimed ”upscale dive bar,” just opened in the former Mineola digs of Tasca Convivio.
The place is co-owned by Kashmir Arnold and Deanna Nauer, who are assisted by restaurant consultant Marc Katz.
First thing I noticed on executive chef Phil Salerno's menu was Frito pie ($9.95) — the second time within a month I’ve come across the classic of corn chips topped with beef chili and cheese and presented in a Frito's plastic bag. Also on the menu: a “wedge dog,” or a half pound hot dog with thick-cut bacon, tomato and creamy blue cheese dressing ($10.95), a ¾ pound cheeseburger ($10.95) and a pastrami sandwich on rye ($12.95).
That sandwich is actually reprised from the Austin, Texas, restaurant that Katz owned for 31 years, Katz's Deli — no relation to the one in Manhattan. A roster of shaken drinks, like an uptown Manhattan, is the specialty of Arnold, who was both manager and bartender at Katz’s.
Shakers is at 267 Mineola Blvd., Mineola, 516-294-0441.
