Shawarma quick and kosher in Lawrence

Five Towns residents in need of a fast shawarma fix are in luck. Ahuva’s Grill, the two-and-a-half star Yeminite-Israeli restaurant in Hewlett, just spawned a quick-serve takeout spot, Ahuva’s Express, in Lawrence. Like the original spot, this one is glatt kosher.

Co-owner Avi Tsadok said the place is furnished with six bar stools. Every day, the kitchen turns out two kinds of shawarma, similar to gyro — one made with baby chicken, the other with lamb and turkey. The meat is marinated, layered onto a spit, rotisserie-roasted and sliced.

The shawarma may be had on pita ($10.95) or a baguette ($12.95), or as a platter ($16.95 baby chicken; $17.95 lamb) with a choice of salad, rice or fries. Also on the short menu:  hummus with falafel ($7.95), spicy schnitzel pita sandwich ($9.95) and grilled chicken on a baguette ($11.95).
