Smithtown: end of the line for Union Station

A “for sale” banner outside Union Station in Smithtown announces the bad news that the restaurant has run out of steam.
The tavern and dining room were situated in the restored Smithtown Hotel, built in 1917; its attractively old fashioned decor paid homage to that period. Overlooking the station itself, the place reverberated every time a train pulled in.
Newsday’s Peter Gianotti gave the American cuisine a single star, noting, “You can have a satisfying meal; just order carefully.” More recently, he noted, the food had improved.
