The reason strawberries exist is pictured above.

This is the strawberry sundae made with fresh strawberries at Snowflake, the ice-cream star in Riverhead. During strawberry season, I skip the whipped cream and the cherry just to indulge in the sweetest, ripest of flavors. You may have yours with Stu Feldschuh's great hard ice cream or his peerless soft-serve. The sundae is an exceedingly well-spent $5.99.

But you may want to add extra scoops.

Snowflake was offering cannoli ice cream over the weekend, too.  If it's still available when you go, a taste is essential. Also in the current repertoire is "Black Magic Woman," a grand union of chocolate ice cream, fudge, chocolate chips and chocolate crunchies that improves on all versions, including those of Santana and Fleetwood Mac.

Peach season is coming next.
