Syosset debutante: Sawa Sushi

I’ve been eating a lot of chirashi these days. To me, something as simple as sliced raw fish over rice says a lot about a Japanese restaurant.
I tried the chirashi just the other day at the new Sawa Sushi in Syosset, which takes up residence in the former digs of Higashi. The fish was fine – generously portioned, prettily arranged and fresh – but I found the rice a bit bland. A big hit was the restaurant's “crazy salmon” roll (spicy crunchy salmon topped with fresh salmon), which had a nice flavor-texture thing going on.
Service was extremely friendly. Best of all, Sawa is giving a 20 percent discount through August 15.
