It had been a long while since I’d eaten at Baja Grill in East Northport (which also has a Smithtown branch). The Tex-Mex Cal-Mex eateries have been through many changes over the years and, I thought, had lost some of their original vibrancy.

But, on a recent night, I stopped in for soft corn tacos, a fish and a pulled pork.  The fish taco was OK — some cubes of batter-fried cod with pico de gallo and Cajun mayonnaise — but it was the subtly spicy, flavorsome mountain of  shredded pork that made my evening. Even though I could have done without the grated cheddar on top.

On the downside, my dinner companion’s chicken fajita wrap ($9.99) was heavy on the saffron rice. It also contained lime sour cream and pico de gallo, onions and peppers. And yet, with all that wetness, the pieces of overgrilled chicken inside were dry.

Baja Grill is at 1920 Jericho Tpke., East Northport, 631-462-2252, as well as 20 E. Main St., Smithtown, 631-979-2252, bajagrillny.com.
