Taiko Sushi in Massapequa: First bites

In Massapequa, new restaurant seekers craving a Japanese food fix have a new source: Taiko Sushi, which debuted in the former home of CJ’s Family Diner. It's a casual spot characterized by rustic wood-canopied booths and friendly service. Very good food, too.
At dinner, recently, I was impressed with a steaming and fragrant bowl of clam soup, at $3.50, loaded with fresh shellfish and vegetables. The sushi bar did well with the ornate “angel” roll featuring black pepper tuna, salmon, avocado and eel, at $11.95. But while every piece of finfish in the chirashi was fresh and well-cut, I thought the portion somewhat skimpy for the $21 price. I also could have done without such banalities as cooked shrimp and crab stick.
The restaurant, I learned, is unaffiliated with the Taiko in Rockville Centre.
Taiko Sushi is at 630 Broadway, Massapequa, 516-868-8899.
