Online speculation about the recent closure of The James in Babylon has been at an all-time high since the restaurant abruptly closed with only a brief social media notice earlier this month. The popular spot should reopen by the weekend, according to owner Steve Squitiro, who said on Monday the closure is temporary.
Squitiro said a paperwork issue with the New York State Liquor Authority triggered the unexpected closure on April 10. Squitiro attributes a "change in corporate structure" for the clerical inconsistency.
"This came out of nowhere for us. We’re hoping that we are up and running by week’s end," he said. "I want to be clear that there was no underage drinking or fights or violence. I fear that the minute people hear a liquor license was involved, they expect the worst."
Squitiro said The James is continuing to host all special events as scheduled because they have the permits from the liquor authority for those gatherings.
Alongside partner Andrew Affa, Squitiro opened The James to great fanfare in 2024: It was named one of Newsday's Best New Spots that same year, described as having a "sweeping entry staircase, a massive brasserie-style bar, head-turning artwork, teetering seafood towers and iconic throwback dishes (lobster Thermidor, beef Wellington)."
The Suffolk County Department of Health confirmed a clean record for the eatery. And with a pending status on its liquor license, the team is eager to be back in business.
"Most importantly, I’m concerned for the 100 people I have out right now," Squitiro said, referring to his staff. "They are family, and we just want to get everyone back to work."
