House of Yoshin, Huntington

One of Long Island's most ambitious Japanese restaurants has closed after not much more than a year. House of Yoshin brought the ancient art of kaiseki to Huntington, through its magical 10-course dinners that were set at $262.50 a pop. Renovation to the former KuraBarn space took two and a half years, and House of Yoshin lasted only a few months before it underwent a concept change to a more familiar omakase experience. It was on Newsday's list of Long Island's Top Sushi Restaurants this year. But the restaurant served its last nigiri on Aug. 31.

Del Fuego, Patchogue

Del Fuego's Patchogue location has closed after 11 years.

Downtown Patchogue has lost Del Fuego Tex Mex Kitchen and Tequila after 11 years. The eatery opened in 2015 in a 100-year-old building, Newsday previously reported. In addition to its Tex-Mex food made in-house from scratch, Del Fuego offered an array of 65 tequilas and rotating selection of craft beers, its website said. The restaurant also has locations in St. James and East Northport.

Bird & Bao, Patchogue

Long Island has lost its top spot for Asian bao sandwiches. Located in the bustling downtown Patchogue neighborhood, the stylish Bird & Bao was consistently on Newsday's list of Top 50 Restaurants. Owned by Long Island native Conor Swanson, the fast-casual fried chicken shop was an anomaly in the neighborhood, which skews toward larger, party restaurants. Swanson brought a chef's focus to the bao genre, which originated in China and was popularized by Swanson's former employer David Chang of the Momofuku brand. Swanson's chicken thighs were prepared using a painstaking process of marinating the thighs for 24 hours in a soy sauce spice mix, before dredging them in potato starch and frying them twice. The closure was announced in an Instagram post.

Sushi Village, Hicksville

A Japanese eatery known for its all-you-can-eat sushi deals quietly closed this summer after 14 years in a former Hicksville diner. Sushi Village opened in 2012, as part of a small group with locations in Bayside, Queens, and Westwood, New Jersey, Newsday previously reported. It was based in the home of the former Beverly Diner.

La Nonna Bella, Garden City

Garden City has lost one of its culinary treasures: La Nonna Bella has closed. On July 4, owners Lino and Erica De Vivo posted that they would be closed until July 13, which hardly raised an eyebrow since the family usually took a week in the summer to visit Puglia, Lino’s native region in Italy’s boot. But the weeks went by and the restaurant stayed closed. Today they announced that it would not be reopening. Erica said that they were unable to come to a new lease agreement with their landlord. La Nonna Bella was opened in 2008 by Anna Maola. Lino was the chef and, in 2010, he and his wife bought the business. For the next 16 years, it managed a neat trick: It was the village’s beloved local Italian and also an Islandwide destination for the regional food of Puglia.

Jani, Hicksville

Jani, a Chinese-Japanese mainstay of the Hicksville community, closed after 30 years on July 20. Chris Shah, whose parents, Alexander Shah and Katie Huang, owned the restaurant, said that they sold it in 2023, soon after Alexander started treatment for lung cancer. Chris said that his mother wanted “to spend more time taking care of her parents and my dad.” In Dec. 2025, Alexander died of pancreatic cancer. Jani opened at 260 N. Broadway in 1995. It was the second Jani owned by Shah and Huang, whose father had bought the Jani at Walt Whitman shopping center in Huntington Station from its original owners, Jani and Michael Chen. (It opened in 1988 and closed a few years after Hicksville opened.) Huang said other family members opened more Janis in Rockville Centre, Mineola, Franklin Square and Wantagh. Only Wantagh remains.

Aperitif, Rockville Centre

Aperitif, the French bistro in the heart of Rockville Centre, will serve its last supper this Sunday. After a renovation that owner Onur Otkas hopes will take no more than two months, it will reemerge as Sage & Sea Coastal Kitchen & Bar, a more casual concept offering more small plates, more Mediterranean dishes and lower prices. The new name also serves to tie the new eatery to Otkas’ Sage Bistro Moderne, which opened in Woodbury in 2009. It was a year later that Otkas and Julio Velasquez (who has since left the building and moved out of state) opened Aperitif. With its mirrored walls, red upholstery and globe light fixtures, it was every inch the bistro Français and the menu was full of classics such as escargots, mussel pots, steak frites, sole meunière and crème brûlée.

Piccolo Ristorante, Bellmore

Piccolo Ristorante served its final meal after 47 years in Bellmore on Fourth of July weekend. "For a myriad of reasons, we are being forced to reconsider what we’re going to be doing," family member Tom Valenti Jr. said. The popular restaurant, originally named Piccolo Pizza and Pasta, was founded in 1979 by Tom Valenti Sr. and his wife, Donna. Valenti Jr.'s siblings, Christi, Rob and Lori Valenti, were also involved in the business. In 1998, the restaurant doubled its size and changed to a new name, Piccolo Ristorante. According to the restaurant’s website, its private room served up to 140 guests. In 2009, it opened an outpost in Carle Place, which closed after three years. The eatery offered items like 9-inch individual pizzas, chicken Florentine and veal cacciatore served on guests' choice of pasta. It was also known for hosting milestone celebrations. Through the years, the restaurant contributed to schools, fire departments and more across Merrick, Wantagh, Seaford, Bethpage, Uniondale and Hempstead.

Bluebird Kitchen, Bellmore

One of Long Island's top bistros shut its doors after nearly five years. In a former Red Robin at 405 Merrick Rd. in Bellmore, Bluebird Kitchen was a critic's favorite since it opened and was on Newsday's list of Top 100 Long Island Restaurants in 2022. Co-owner Al Di Meglio announced the closure on Instagram, thanking the staff, guests, friends and supporters for "being part of this journey." During a phone conversation, he said the restaurant was just not making enough money, and that he and partners Louis Silverman and Adam Mann wanted to end it on a high note.

Lola, Great Neck

When it opened in 2009, there was no other Long Island restaurant remotely like Lola and, after it closed its doors, its elegant, Middle Eastern-fusion cuisine will be enshrined in the taste memory of its many fans. Chef-partner Lenny Messina said that after years of splitting his time between the restaurant and Hudson Valley Farms, its sister company in upstate Ferndale, the farm had won. Lola was founded by Michael Ginor, an Israeli-American globe-trotting culinary insider who also co-owned Hudson Valley Foie Gras, the country’s leading producer of foie gras that was the forerunner of Hudson Valley Farms. Lola quickly vaulted into the top tier of Long Island restaurants, earning 3½ stars from Newsday and a place on Newsday’s Top 100 and, later, Top 50 restaurant lists. Messina came aboard in 2012 and began concentrating on perfecting such Levantine treasures as hummus, baba ghanoush and malawach (a rich-yet-flaky, Yemenite-style flatbread topped with mushrooms and roasted garlic) as well as creating New American dishes with Middle Eastern flavors such as Hudson Valley duck with pomegranate, charred onion and walnut sauce, or sticky lamb ribs with sunchoke mousseline and preserved lemon. Everything was prepared with extraordinary refinement and served in a fine-dining setting along with equally refined wines and cocktails.

The Theo Thai Bistro, Bethpage

After five years in business, one of the only halal Thai restaurants on Long Island has closed. The sign has been removed and the windows have been covered at The Theo Thai Bistro in Bethpage. A paper sign taped to the window reads "closed," right underneath a sticker showing the eatery made Newsday's Top 100 Restaurants on Long Island in 2023. The restaurant was a critics' favorite since it opened in December 2020. Theo Thai also made Newsday's list of top Thai restaurants in 2024. Owners Khoa and Thanida Nguyen could not be reached for comment, but last June the couple opened Bangkok Villa Bistro at 341 Wantagh Ave. in Levittown, which is also halal. The Theo Thai Bistro had a unique menu of Thai classics drawn from Thanida's upbringing, alongside Vietnamese pho noodle soups that Khoa grew up on in his native city of Ninh Kieu, Vietnam. The menu online for Bangkok Villa Bistro also lists several varieties of pho, as well as curry noodles and udon stir fries.

1653 Pizza Company and Rust & Gold, Huntington

Two mainstays of the Huntington Village hospitality scene — The Rust & Gold sports bar and 1653 Pizza Company — have closed. The two venues share ownership and, in March, they went on the market for $1.2 million. Frank Antonetti, a partner in both businesses, said that "both restaurants are closed while we finalize a sale." The Rust & Gold opened in 2016 and established itself as a sports bar where the vibe, the drinks and the food were a cut above. In 2021, the group took over the former Massa’s pizzeria along the same strip and transformed it into 1653 Pizza Company, named for the year that the Matinecock Indians sold what became Huntington to three English settlers from Oyster Bay. Antonetti, an accomplished bartender, made 1653 a destination for craft cocktails. Initially, 1653’s pizzaiolo-partner, Michael Vigliotti, worked with the coal-burning oven that Massa's had left behind; eventually, he replaced it with a wood-burning oven. In 2024, he left the restaurant.

Gastronomy Kitchen by Cirella's, Huntington Station

Walt Whitman Shops' Gastronomy Kitchen by Cirella’s has closed. The new-American restaurant opened inside Saks Fifth Avenue at Huntington Station’s Walt Whitman Shops in 2016. Its fate has been in limbo since Long Island’s last Saks Fifth Avenue announced in March its plans to close in May. Gastronomy was owned by Dean and Karen Cirella, who also own Cirella’s Italian restaurant in Melville. The eatery was accessible from inside the mall and had its own entrance at the rear of Saks, so it could be open when the store was closed. Gastronomy served lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch. The menu included mains such as short-rib risotto, seafood cioppino and lobster pot pie. Gastronomy also offered live music and late-night happy hours Monday through Thursday.

Crabby Amy's, Seaford

The dockside eatery Crabby Amy's had been a fixture of the Treasure Island Marina in Seaford for 27 years, but owner Amy Breidenbach said it would not be returning this year after a fire completely destroyed the building last summer. The restaurant at 2880 Ocean Ave. had barely survived Superstorm Sandy, but was taken out in an evening fire last August. A casual clam shack, Crabby Amy's had an approachable menu of seafood dishes, and was lauded in Newsday for its "luxurious" seafood omelet, which was "chock-full of freshly picked crabmeat and big shrimp."

Cafe Il Villaggio, Babylon

Babylon Village’s Cafe Il Villaggio had been a neighborhood staple serving Italian American classics for 31 years before it closed in late April. Owned by Lucy and Mike Domingo, Villaggio was an extended family affair from the beginning. Lucy’s sister, Josephine Mannina, said. Whether it was baked clams or fried calamari you were seeking, a Caesar salad, chicken Marsala, veal parmigiana, filet oreganata or shrimp scampi, Villaggio had you covered. With more than 30 pasta dishes on the menu — including classics like fettuccine Alfredo and more complex offerings like the pappardelle Siciliane, made with chopped meat, peas, pignoli nuts, prosciutto and raisins in a tomato bechamel — carb cravings were satisfied on the daily.

Zaro's Cafe, Huntington Station

Zaro’s Cafe has closed after 33 years in Huntington Station. Edmund Zarou, manager of the Greek and Italian restaurant, confirmed the closure of the eatery, which was established in 1993. He is a third-generation operator of the restaurant. The Zarou family business struggled to stay afloat through rising costs and lower sales.

Estia's Little Kitchen, Sag Harbor

Estia’s Little Kitchen has been sold after 27 years in Sag Harbor. The eatery, known for its American comfort food with a southwestern twist, had been on the market for years, according to owner Colin Ambrose. Its building has been sold to Malibu-based health-focused brand Sun Life Organics, Ambrose said. "I bought the restaurant in 1998. I ran it to the best of my ability for 27 years, knowing that when I reached Social Security age, I would put it up for sale," Ambrose said.

Precious Chinese, East Northport

East Northport residents will have one less spot for Chinese food when Precious, a Chinese food mainstay in East Northport in business for 25 years, serves its last egg roll March 31. A person who answered the phone said the restaurant's lease is up and the owners are retiring. The restaurant's classic menu included steamed roast pork buns, dumplings, cold sesame noodles and scallion pancakes to start, followed by entrees from parchment prawns (a riff on salt and pepper shrimp), sesame tofu, moo shu vegetables, and General Tso’s chicken.

Sunnyside Diner, Huntington

The sun has set on Huntington’s Sunnyside Diner less than a year after its opening. Former manager Lucio Alfaro confirmed the Greek-inspired eatery on New York Avenue had closed. Before Sunnyside took over the space in 2024, it was Skorpios by Avli. Sunnyside honored Skorpios’ 50-year history of serving Mediterranean fare with artwork featuring Greek destinations such as Santorini and Athens. The restaurant was owned by Kelvin Alfaro, who owns Blue Angel Diner in Plainview and Station Coffee Shop in Huntington Station. The menu included chicken souvlaki and chicken and lamb gyros. The diner also served breakfast favorites such as chicken and waffles and chocolate chip pancakes.

Gasho of Japan, Hauppauge

Gasho of Japan, a hibachi steakhouse that was a longtime staple of the Hauppauge restaurant scene, has served its last meal. Richard Buono, of Island Associates Real Estate Inc., told Newsday the restaurant closed in January. It had opened in Hauppauge in 1984. Gasho struggled to keep up with increasing utility and maintenance bills among a changing culture, Buono said. Gasho’s hibachi-style experience, where a chef cooks food in front of patrons, is no longer as unusual as it was when it first opened, Buono said, as many similar restaurants have since opened in the area. Gasho of Japan opened in Hauppauge as part of a small chain with the same name created by Shiro Aoki, according to Newsday records. Aoki's family founded the Benihana restaurant chain. The Hauppauge restaurant was a replica of the original in upstate Central Valley, which opened in 1971.

Dang Roadhouse, Seaford

It’s the end of the road for Dang Roadhouse in Seaford. The 6-year-old barbecue specialist, housed in the old Seaford Palace Diner, served its last rack of ribs on Feb. 28. Owner Anthony Mastrantonio said the location had proved "too big for the amount of business it was doing," and that he and his landlord were looking for a replacement concept. Dang BBQ opened in Seaford 2020 and, except for the new sign, the building’s exterior remained untouched. But, inside, reclaimed wood and corrugated metal did a fine job of transforming the dining room into a rollicking modern, country-style roadhouse that gradually expanded on the barbecue menu with Southern specialties as well as panini, salads and bowls and a milkshake bar. In 2024, he renamed the place Dang Roadhouse.

TBar, Roslyn

Much fanfare surrounded the Roslyn expansion of Manhattan’s TBar in 2024. No expense was spared on the stunning design and the food was great, but would the gamble on the suburbs work? Unfortunately for Roslyn diners, TBar closed earlier this week. The swank spot, owned by Derek Axelrod, is "closed for good," he said. "Roslyn just was a difficult market for us, being a city concept with business daily. TBar in Roslyn’s menu was based on the city location and included high-level steaks like a 40-ounce porterhouse and an 8-ounce filet, herb grilled branzino and soy-wasabi crusted tuna. There was even spaghetti and meatballs and sushi; Long Island additions included pizza from the space’s brick oven. The bar, a dark, moody space, excelled in the art of the jalapeño cucumber margarita.

Sayville Bait & Tackle, Sayville

Sayville Bait & Tackle, the charming nautical-themed bar popular with South Shore locals, has closed after a roughly five-year run. The space is to reopen as Off the Bay, a bar and restaurant specializing in locally caught seafood. New owner Rob DelGiorno said he took over the space at 220 N. Main St. on Jan. 1 with business partners Michael Jordan and Shaun Ihne. A big part of the attraction was the "old-school Long Island" nautical vibes. DelGiorno also co-owns two other spots, Whiskey Neat in Patchogue and the recently opened Frankie's Table in Commack. Sayville Bait & Tackle closed earlier this month for renovations that will turn it into a family-oriented bar restaurant.

The Corner Bar, Sag Harbor

It’s rare when the essence of the owner is embedded in his business, but that’s the case with The Corner Bar in Sag Harbor, which has changed ownership after 48 years. Jim Smyth opened The Corner Bar in February 1978, running it until his death in 2017 at 66. The business was put into a trust for his widow, Margaret Smyth, and remained open until Feb. 8, when the eatery closed after an emotional goodbye bash. Margaret said economic hardship wasn’t the reason for the sale, it was just time to retire. New owners John and Kelly Piccinnini, who also own The Clam Bar and Sett Coffee in Amagansett, vow to keep what the community loves about the landmark eatery, including its name, but will update the menu.

Hunan Tapas, Great Neck

One of Long Island's newest Chinese restaurants has closed after only about six months in business. Hunan Tapas opened in Great Neck in July, and quickly became a critics' pick as one of the only places to get spicy Hunan dishes like sour pickled intestines and smashed chilies with century egg. It was included in Newsday's list of Top Chinese restaurants of 2025, among other standout spots serving Sichuan, Northern Chinese and dim sum. The Great Neck restaurant is an outpost of owner Chi Zhang's original Hunan Tapas, based in Long Island City, Queens. The recipes are inspired by Zhang's mother, who is from the Southern Chinese province known for its fresh and spicy stir fries. But Zhang was trying to meld those flavors with Chinese American fare, creating a large menu with both Cantonese and Hunan staples, often unmarked.

Locale Gastro Bar & Pizzette, Patchogue

Locale Gastro Bar & Pizzette has served its last meals after a nearly decade-long run along Patchogue’s restaurant row. The Italian American restaurant opened in 2017 in the New Village mixed use complex owned by Tritec, which confirmed the restaurant's closing. Locale had an industrial chic look with exposed pipes and bricks. Its menu included a meat and cheese board, small pizzas and Nonna Rosa's meatballs, among classics such as chicken parm, Milanese and piccata.

Eckart's Luncheonette, Westhampton Beach

Eckart's Luncheonette, a Westhampton Beach landmark run for 115 years by four generations of the same family, has been sold and has ceased operations under family ownership. Eckart's, at 162 Mill Rd., closed on Feb. 17, but the former owners assured patrons that they are leaving the luncheonette "in good hands." Founded in 1911 by Jacob Eckart, the eatery first operated as a barroom called the Outside Inn. According to a history posted by Eckart's, the bar was transformed into Eckart's Soda Shoppe during Prohibition, and, in 1949, Warren (Red) Eckart took over the operation from his father, running it with his wife, Shirley, as they raised six children, turning the soda shop into Eckart's Luncheonette, which served all-day breakfast.

Vincent's Restaurant & Pizzeria, Albertson

A landmark Albertson eatery, Vincent’s Restaurant & Pizzeria, has closed after a decades-long run on Willis Avenue. A recorded message on the shop's phone line cites the "expiration of our lease." The owner could not be reached for comment. The pizzeria, at 1004 Willis Ave., has been around since at least 1978. Cliff Sondock, a director of leasing at Spiegel Associates, landlords of the Albertson Shopping Center, said the space is available. Vincent's was an old-school pizzeria serving classic Sicilian pizza as well as specialty pies like chicken alla vodka pie and barbecue chicken pizza. There were hero sandwiches such as chicken cutlet Milanese and grilled chicken with broccoli rabe besides specialty pastas and seafood entrees.

Buffalo Wild Wings, Hicksville

If you’re craving Buffalo wings in Hicksville to snack on during next week's Super Bowl, there will be one less option to consider: The Buffalo Wild Wings location in the former Broadway Commons mall served its last chicken wing on Feb. 2. Founded in 1982 as a popular spot to watch sports, throw back some beers and eat wings, Buffalo Wild Wings is known for its vast selections of sauces including honey BBQ, Parmesan garlic, mango habanero, Thai curry and Caribbean jerk. In 2025, Newsday reported that the restaurant chain had opened its first quick-service location in Nassau County, part of the brand's new strategy of opening smaller, takeout-focused locations across the country. Those locations are in Bellmore, Shirley and Patchogue.

Zorba the Greek, Port Jefferson Station

The owners of Zorba the Greek, a longtime Port Jefferson Station staple, have closed the restaurant after a 46-year run. The family-owned restaurant will continue to serve its authentic Greek dishes at its Zorba the Greek Express in nearby Selden. Zorba the Greek was founded by Peter Englezos, then in his early 20s, on Jan. 10, 1980. But just weeks ago, on Dec. 31, the Englezos family announced via Instagram the restaurant was closing its doors at its long-standing location in Jefferson Plaza due to a construction project by Staller Associates. The owners plan to transform the shopping center into a mixed-use complex that will include business and apartment space.

Tommy Tacos, Syosset

New year, new beginnings: Just six months after Tommy Tacos opened at 98 Jackson Ave. in Syosset, the restaurant has closed, and is pivoting to open a takeout-centric spot in Sayville later this month. "It was very fast and unexpected," said Tommy Tacos chef-owner, Tom Stein. The Syosset shop, which had become more full-service, less fast-casual, "wasn’t on the market, nor were we looking to close," Stein said. "We just got an offer on the restaurant unexpectedly that we couldn’t refuse. That’s the only reason." That offer came from SmartWich, the Hicksville shop owned by chef Michael Guerrieri that churns out killer artisanal sandwiches, like mozzarella, sweet peppers, tomato and arugula; homemade pickled sardines with pickled onions and tomatoes, cilantro and olive oil; and octopus with diced red and green peppers and onions.

Red Apple Diner, Lynbrook

The Red Apple Diner had only occupied 401 Sunrise Hwy. since 2022, but it was the successor to the Lynbrook Diner, which began operation in 1929 and closed in 2019. Now, a sign on the door reads "closed for renovations," but a bigger sign on one of the windows announces that the property is available. Nick Mavromihalis had operated the Lynbrook Diner since 1985, except for a few months after a January 2014 fire when it was closed. Its successor, Red Apple, was owned by Vasillios Kefaalas, according to Estiator, "The National Magazine of the Greek American Food Industry," and other sources.

Oak Chalet, Bellmore

One of Long Island's oldest German restaurants, Oak Chalet in Bellmore, has been serving the hearty foods of southern Germany's Bavaria region since 1981. But owner Gisela Wedel said after the death of her husband, Dieter Reinking, the family sold the business and closed Jan. 4. Wedel's extended family has been helping her run the restaurant since Reinking died in February. But lately, Wedel said, it's been very expensive to maintain the business and more difficult to find good staff. Many of Oak Chalet's employees have been working there for more than three decades, she said. And she's hoping the new owners of the business will find a way to keep them on. She also said the spot will probably not remain a German restaurant. The stone building is known for its Old World atmosphere and collection of Bavarian objects, like boot-shaped ceramic beer steins. The menu includes Wiener schnitzels, smoked pork chops, sauerbraten and red cabbage, bratwurst and more.
