Unquestionably, steakhouses are, course by course, the priciest restaurants on Long Island. They’re also very, very popular.

There are two chain establishments on the current roster, The Capital Grille and Ruth’s Chris Steak House, both in Garden City. Generally, familiar restaurants dominate the category from Peter Luger to Rothmann’s. What you enjoy at several of them goes well beyond, beef, too.

On this island, seafood is one of the most popular cuisines. Local fish and shellfish and their imported relatives are served grilled, baked, broiled, fried, sautéed, poached, steamed, pan-seared, marinated, and raw.

And, over the years, the staples have gone well beyond those served in the era of the combo platter, fried or broiled; basic clam-bar specialties; and lobster-salad rolls.

A new generation of eateries takes in true oyster bars, whole-fish specialists, casual spots with fish markets as well as restaurants, and destinations for ceviche, seasonal fare, and whatever a creative chef finds challenging. It’s easy to become a pescatarian.

LI's best seafood restaurants of 2019

Ten years ago, most of Long Island's Chinese restaurants fell into one of three categories: neighborhood takeouts, old-fashioned Chinese-American egg-rolleries and newer Asian-fusion spots where General Tso got an assist from sushi and pad thai. 

Now we are in the midst of a regional Chinese food boom, with Canton, Sichuan, Dongbei and, new for 2019, Yunnan and Shanghai strutting their culinary stuff. 

The boom, which shows no sign of slowing down, is driven by hungry Chinese students attending Stony Brook and Hofstra, Chinese families moving across the Queens border into Nassau and Chinese food lovers of all stripes who are thankful they don't have to drive into Flushing for authentic dan dan noodles, soup dumplings or tea-smoked duck.
