Watch out for Smashburger

In today’s Newsday, Jim Bernstein breaks the news that Smashburger is coming to Long Island. The Denver-based burger chain has only a handful of stores east of the Mississippi, only one of which, in Montclair, New Jersey, is on the East Coast. That should all change within the year: Irwin Kruger, the fast-food impresario who opened the first McDonald’s in Manhattan (in 1973) and the three-story McDonald’s in Times Square (in 2002), has signed on with Smashburger to open as many as 20 locations on Long Island in the next five years. The first is to open later this year, according to Smashburger founder Tom Ryan.
According to the menu, a smashburger is “100 percent Angus beef smashed on the grill to sear the beef and seal in all the flavor” and is “served on an artisan butter toasted bun”—whatever that is. Also of interest, they make shakes and malteds with Haagen Dazs.
