Watercolors Cafe at Melville Hilton: Bland, blah breakfast

Sure, I knew that the food at the Hilton Long Island/Huntington in Melville has a long tradition of mediocrity. Even so, I agreed to meet an out-of-town friend and her mom for breakfast there. Since they were overnight guests with a flight to catch, this was by far the most convenient option. And the lovely, light-filled Watercolors Cafe in the lobby happens to be one of the most attractive breakfast spots for miles around.
In retrospect, I might have done better had I opted for the $15.95 breakfast buffet. Or had I followed the lead of my companions by ordering simple scrambled eggs ($10). But a whole wheat wrap containing egg whites scrambled with tomatoes, onions and peppers ($9) sounded slightly more appealing.
What was I thinking? For starters, I don't even like wraps — all that doughy folded-over stuff. Worse, this wrap's filling was entirely unseasoned. Unraveling half — no easy process — I sprinkled on salt and pepper. Re-wrapping wasn't quite so easy; I ultimately gave up and just ate the eggs plus a few home fries and the fruit on the side.
I'm no advocate of high-sodium eating, but I do believe in flavor — which, by the way, doesn't have to come from a ton of salt. So while the food police try to legislate what should and shouldn’t be served at restaurants, I'm proposing a law against utter blandness.
Watercolors Cafe at the Hilton Long Island/Huntington is at 598 Broad Hollow Rd., Melville, 631-845-1000.
