The weeks get busier and the time gets shorter. Welcome to the school year, early edition.
Here are some good eateries, suitable for children young and old, that prepare tasty food at moderate prices, pre- or post-homework, after just about everything.
Phil's Pizzeria & Restaurant attracts a big crowd. Given the portions, it's no surprise. Although Phil's is easy to recommend for an expansive pizza-pasta-Parmigiana repertoire, it's also worth visiting for pork chops with hot cherry peppers, lentil soup, lively salads and husky hero sandwiches. Phil's is at 265 Jericho Tpke., Syosset; 516-364-6900/6911.
Smokin' Al's Famous BBQ Joint has two locations where you can get messy and get filled, in Bay Shore and Massapequa Park. At each: pulled pork, sliced or chopped brisket, baby-back ribs, St. Louis-style ribs, chili, smoked sausage, hot dogs, chicken wings, grilled cheese. Smokin' Al's is at 19 W. Main St., Bay Shore, 631-206-3000; and at 4847 Merrick Rd., Massapequa Park, 516-799-4900.
Oaxaca delivers flavorful Mexican cooking in a casual setting. Friendly service, too. Enjoyable whether you're eating in or taking out. Fine tamales, tacos, enchiladas, chimichangas, nachos, plus ropa vieja, pozole soup, tortilla soup, black bean soup. Oaxaca is at 385 New York Ave., Huntington; 631-547-1232.
