Diabetics should eat a balanced diet while avoiding some nutrient-rich foods that could cause blood sugar to soar. The American Diabetes Association has identified 10 "superfoods" high in nutrition but with a low glycemic index:

Beans are a great source of fiber, magnesium and potassium.

Leafy green vegetables are low in carbs and calories; loaded with nutrition.

Citrus fruits for vitamins and fiber.

Sweet potatoes are lower in carbs, higher in nutrition than white potatoes.

Berries satisfy a sweet tooth and provide antioxidants.

Tomatoes, a source of lycopene and vitamin A.

Salmon is rich in health-boosting omega-3 fatty acids.

Whole grains are healthier than processed grain foods such as white bread.

Nuts manage hunger pangs but are high in calories, so eat no more than two ounces a day.

Fat-free dairy products, for vitamin D and calcium without the cholesterol.
