Whether your grandkids live with you, across the country or down the block, you can help shape their future. Many grandparents help out financially, but all grandparents can share some things even more important than money: values, wisdom and their time.

A new survey by MetLife Mature Market Institute found that the No. 1 value grandparents wanted to pass down to their grandkids is honesty. Also high on the list are good behavior and self-sufficiency. The survey also found that 62 percent of grandparents provided financial help for their grandchildren.

If you want to sit down with your grandkids and discuss values but don't know where to start, MetLife has a booklet that can help you begin the conversation. "Grandparents Investing in Grandchildren" can be downloaded in PDF form at bit.ly/grandparents-values.
