Cellphone scam alert: Be careful before you use the caller ID function on your mobile phone to call back an unfamiliar number. The Better Business Bureau says a new scam aimed at unsuspecting cellphone users could result in sizable charges.
Here's how the fraud works: Scam artists hang up after one ring, hoping you will call them back to see if you missed an important call, even if you don't recognize the number. But if you call, the BBB says you are connected to a "paid international adult entertainment service or chat line." This could mean you will be billed not only for the call, but for a "premium service" of $19.95.
The scammers typically use numbers originating from area codes 809 (Dominican Republic), 876 (Jamaica, West Indies), 284 (British Virgin Islands) and 473 (Grenada).
The BBB says always inspect your cellphone bills for unauthorized charges.
