Marvin Rostolder of Sands Point, featured in the Act 2 cover story on Aug. 6, is making steady progress in his solo bike ride from Vancouver to San Francisco.

The 69-year-old retired venture capitalist is embracing a healthy lifestyle, taking in the sights and raising money ($7,860 so far, with $1,500 more pledged) for the Child Care Council of Nassau County. Here, after negotiating the hills of Seattle, he stopped at the famous Pike Place Market.

"They got me up behind the counter and tossed me a . . . salmon and I caught it" to the cheers of the packed crowds, he wrote in his journal. He hopes to reach Crescent City, Calif., Sept. 3. From there, it will be about 400 miles to San Francisco, which he hopes to reach by Sept. 15.
