Friday marks the 70th anniversary of D-Day. It is a momentous day in world history and also remains a personal memory to the families of the more than 20,000 soldiers who landed on the beaches at Normandy, France.
One of the many Long Islanders who was part of that decisive battle of World War II was Anthony Biondolillo, who lived in New Hyde Park and Holbrook, and died in 1991. His story will be told by his daughter, Anita Cafferty of Oakdale, at 2 p.m. Friday at Sachem Public Library in Holbrook.
In "D-Day: Love Letters From the Front," Cafferty will read from her parents' letters from 1943 to 1946, when Biondolillo was stationed overseas as a captain in the Army Corps of Engineers. Cafferty also will discuss her recent trips to Normandy and Nuremberg, Germany, where she visited sites and landmarks her father mentioned in his letters.
