If you're unhappy with the face staring at you from the mirror, you've probably thought about the pros and cons of cosmetic surgery. For many, however, the word "surgery" presents too big a worry.

But minimally invasive procedures such as Botox injections, fillers and laser surgery are "exceedingly safe," according to new research from Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. Researchers analyzed more than 20,000 minimally invasive cosmetic surgeries and found "essentially no risk of serious adverse events." Minor side effects such as bruising and swelling occurred in less than 1 percent of the patients and disappeared on their own after a short recuperation period.

The researchers noted that minimally invasive procedures offered "significant cosmetic benefit" and were far safer than invasive surgeries such as face-lifts and liposuction that carry much higher risk.

The study was published last month in the medical journal JAMA Dermatology.
