A free tool kit from the federal government can help you nail your retirement dreams.

The Retirement Toolkit, a joint project of the Labor Department, Social Security Administration and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, has advice on maximizing retirement savings as well as information on retirement benefits you may be entitled to.

The kit features a "retirement timeline" with tips for retirees and would-be retirees, beginning at age 50 and ending at age 70½, when it's time to start taking required minimum distributions, most often referred to as RMDs, from most retirement accounts.

There are also dozens of links to government websites and publications that will give you in-depth information about each subject. To download the tool kit, go to bit.ly/retire-kit.
