Tax breaks may be hard to find these days, but people 60 and older can at least get a break on tax-preparation fees.
The IRS offers free tax-preparing help through its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs. (The Tax Counseling for the Elderly program is a bit misnamed: It is for anyone 60 and older.) To find a location, go to irs.treasury.gov/freetaxprep.
And Suffolk's Family Service League has free tax preparation in Bay Shore, East Yaphank, Huntington and Riverhead for individuals and families with annual incomes less than $49,000. Go to bit.ly/taxes-fsl.
